New Shop on Staten Island: One Up Sneakers
Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Here at N-SB.org we are always down to help our members out.  This one’s for all the NY-based folks.  One Up Sneakers opened up as the first sneaker boutique on Staten Island.  The shop owner, Ron, reached out to us to help get a little bit of press for his shop, so here it is for you all.

Here’s the story behind the shop, the good people there, and where they’re trying to take things.  We wish em nothing but the best in the future.  Tell em N-SB.org sent ya!

From an interview with Ron and One Up Sneakers:

I decided to open a sneaker store on Staten Island because I got fed up with traveling to Brooklyn or Manhattan for limited  kicks and then dealing with snobs and hearing that they never had my size, not to mention NYC tolls. I am lucky enough to be involved with a family that has been in the sneaker game for many years. I decided to ask for a few referrals and here we are today, One Up Sneakers, Staten Island’s ONLY Premium sneaker store located on the South Shore at 960 Bloomingdale rd. carrying Air Jordan, Nike Sb, Supra, Adidas and lots more.

When we decided to open we were going to hook the store up with a sports theme (Astroturf flooring, field goal painted on one wall and a baseball outfield on the other). We had originally planned on carrying some sporting apparel as well as sneakers for all the local schools. After doing some  research it came to us that Staten Island needed a more premium “Sneaker Boutique” rather than just another sneaker/apparel store. We did not want to be like all the other sneaker stores so we decided to find all unique brands for our t-shirt’s and accessories. All of the t-shirts are from local Staten Island Designers, SubConcious Threads, Downside Up, Short Days and long Nights, Cloud Kickers and our best selling t-shirt line Contraverse Clothing, making us unique in the sense that we do not carry the same brands as all other sneaker/apparel stores throughout NYC. This has proven to be successful since we are increasing sales daily and continuing to add to our inventory.

When we opened we hit the sneaker convention scene pretty hard, this is where our personalities came out, when I say personalities I mean our resident SNEAKER HEAD’s, the crew at One Up Sneakers, Eric (E-roc), Kevin (K-Dawg), Chris (Cee Daddy), Phil (Philly feet), Jon (Big Foot), Nikki (Nikki Nice) and myself and family. We managed to make many friends and did some networking. It was our personality and uniqueness that helped us make the appropriate connections to help us get in a lot of sneakers before the actual release dates. Currently we have in the Jordan 11 “SPACE JAMS”, Jordan 6’s Blk/Red, and a bunch more. We also get in many Quick Strikes as well as Hyper Strikes. We are currently in the decision making process as to whether we want to open a “pro” skate shop beneath our store. We have opened all the necessary accounts for skateboarding, BMX and aggressive inline skating to get it rolling. So maybe in Spring 2010 One Up Skates will open its doors. Right now our main project is oneupsneakers.com which should be fully functioning in the next 2-3 weeks. This will allow us to go global, which is our intentions.

So keep your eyes and ears open for One Up Sneakers, if you haven’t already heard.

Michael Orlando

kWest

Blck red 6s? I’ll be there in 5.

Sole Addix

Bout time this place got some props on da net. Was my little secret til now. Copped a pair of TB III’s back in July, Space Jams in Aug and about to go get the VI’s… Cheap too. Gonna blow up like da dump…

?

“Eric (E-roc), Kevin (K-Dawg), Chris (Cee Daddy), Phil (Philly feet), Jon (Big Foot), Nikki (Nikki Nice)”

?

SBGTALLDAY

Whats with the names? Probably there way of making us remember. I been there too. Place is pretty fresh. Look and feel like Manhattan without the rediculous prices. Heard there droppin the JAMS on Dec 19th. Ima cop me atleast 2 for shor.

OLSCHOOL

Damn there closed today, gonna check out the spot on Tues and let ya all know if it was worth the trip over da bridge. Think they’ll pay for my toll?

SK8GRL

I been there last week. I got a pair of the new Blazers and a pair of RESN SB’s. Cheaper then all the skate shops here in Jersey and more variety. Whats happenin to the skateshops in Jersey anyway tryin to charge 150 plus for SB’s. There all gettin greedy. One Up is my new spot. Hope they don’t get greedy on me.

LZYDAYS

Not many places on Shaolin like this, as a matter of fact none. I got one of there flyers in school, can’t wait for a real skate shop to open on SI. Heard they are gonn put a skate team together. Im gonna be Captain.

josh

legit ordered over the phone and got my shoe in 2 days very good store buy the shoes you wont be disapointed

mark

I’ve been in contact with Ron from day one. he’s had the jams for months now. hsi connects are good and he has legit kicks.

It’s not fair to say they are the only premium sneaker shop on SI because Richmond hood is GREAT and gets SBs but not Js and Nike quickstrikes and hyperstrikes. I have been to over 100 sneaker shops across the globe and I know of none that get SBs, Js and Hot, Nike releases that isn’t a consignment shop.

Bottom line check out One up and also check out Richmond hood.

WizzKid

well you should come by to Hawaii.
we got mad spots you gotta hit up.
KiksHI, APB, In4Mation
places be killin it no doubt.

Leon

I have ti disagree mith Mark, dude obviously works for Richmond Hood which is def NOT a premium sneaker store, more like a skate shop that is run by Barbers. I was in Rh just the other day, walked in and one f the Barbers from next door said if I needed somethin to let one of them know. Whats up with that? One Up is the ONLY spot on Staten that has mad sneakers, thus making it SI’s ONLY premium sneaker spot. Not to mention Training Camps are all gone…

Leon

I will tell you this, dudes in Rh looked like they can give a good fade.

Paul

I have been to both places, first of all if you do not know the guys in Richmond Hood they treat you like you don’t belong in there. When you walk into One Up someone is always sayin wats up and they are always cracking jokes, just alot more fun place to be.

As for the kicks, easy, Richmond Hood sometimes has new SB’s (which I never understood since they boast about the only real SB account on SI), so where are all the SB’s?.

One Up on the other hand not only has all the SB’s that are released but, tier zero kicks, QS, HS and not to mention there Jordan collection is growing all the time, and who ever heard of anyone releasing J’s 3 weeks early for regular retail? Well One Up not only releases them early, they leave them priced right. Although some of the consignment kicks that are in there are rediculously priced (AM 90 Playstations $5000) these are priced according to the Owner of the sneaker, not One Up.

Hands down One Up is Shaolins ONLY PREMIUM sneaker spot!

Skully

Been to One Up, Training Camp and Richmond Hood all are on SI. I been in the game along time and can say that One Up is going to be a sick sneaker store, we have to remember that they are barely open a year and have managed to bring us alot of heat to SI. I met Ron at DXC and he is a cool dude. I do not bring kicks to FCNY anymore because One Up sells em faster and are easier to deal with.

I am a semi Pro BMX freestyle rider and look for fresh kicks all the time, if One Up opens a skate shop like they keep talkin about, im switching to there team.

Noodlez

I live on Staten Island and just heard about One Up. When my boy told me about the sneakers in One Up I didn’t believe him. So I had to go check it out for myself, all I’m gonna say is i left with 2 pairs of sneakers, 1 SB and one J.

Go see for yourself. And notice how good it smells in that place!

mark

leon i think it is misleading to say that it the ONLY premium sneaker shop. I went on to discribe the differences acurately. both stores are dope and different and in different locations. staten island has room for two great shops. Ask your boy Ron who I am. I’ve been copping from 1up when it was Ron and ONE PT employee. I don’t know what’s wrong with barbers. most people that start retail stores have done other things before they open their stores. show some love for for your island and stop hating for no reason.

It seems like some of the criticism might be along racial and socio-economic lines.

I’ve copped mad kicks from both spots and I can say the both stores are great and worth a visit. Ron at 1up and T at RH are chill dudes and from what I have heard them say have nothing but love for each other and each other’s business. there is no need for animosity. show the love for SI.

that being said 1up carries Js and hyperstrikes and has plenty of prerelease action that RH is contractually obligated not to sell. beyond that they get more QS love from nike SB. 1up is about kicks and RH is about skating.

Ron

I would like to thank NIKESB.ORG for the posting.

No reason to hate any place on S.I. it is about time we read about both MY shop One Up as well as hear about Richmond Hood.

We are not into bashing ANY other spots on Staten Island.

The one thing that is disturbing is the word racial even being in the post.

If someone does not like how another person treats them it does not turn it into a “racial” issue. The fact that they did not recieve the customer service they were expecting is not at all a racial issue.

mark

I’d like to apologise for bringing race into this discussion. in all my dealings with owners, employees, and customers in both stores I have never found anyone to be racist and I am sorry if my comments sounded like I was saying that.

I moved to staten island about 4 years ago and I really like it here. i’m proud of both spots and have nothing but love for them and fellow SI sneaker heads. I love seeing heat on the ferry.

Tariq

Peace, if you came to Richmond Hood Company then you probably met me, T. I manage RHC & ADG. The dude Mark definitely doesn’t work for Richmond Hood Co. We currently employ a skater & a real stylish young lady. LEON, Please be clear. RHC is what it is. A pretty hot skate / lifestlyle / shop [821 Castleton Ave.]. Right next door to a pretty hot barber shop [Against Da' Grain 819 Castleton Ave]. The space is hot and the way it is used is hot. Tariq

i meant from as far as Japan & Australia

Tariq

I should have included Chefs in the above post. As well as Downside Up. [Peace Marc].

Leon

Sorry if i hit a soar spot on some of ya’all. But it is what it is, I was in Rh just a week ago with my home boy, sorry there was no stylish young lady, like I said there was NO ONE there but the Barbers next door. Sorry if I caught ya all on break but no one was there. Maybe i blew up your spot and was supposed to be there, IDK…

I come from the North Shore which is mostly ghetto and is where I PROUDLY come from. 160 for life!

All I said was dudes looked like the give a good hair cut, if you couldn’t understand my slang.

Also Training Camp closed both stores in the SI mall and on Forest.

That a little more clear for you to understand?

AlienLife

Heres my opinion, I been to just about every sneaker store from Bodega and Concepts in MASS, all the way to ATC in Miami on the EAST coast.

Recently I been to One Up and must say I was pleasantly suprised not only with the pricing/products but also with the atmosphere/personalities of both Ron and Kevin(i think was his name).

Definately had a great selection of sneakers, and lots of em. I was not expecting to walk out of there with the newly anticipated NikeSb RESN, aka GUCCI Dunk. Seems I was lucky as the UPS driver just rolled in two large boxes. Ron was extremely happy as he opened them, so was I. Who ever they get there SB from, I can tell you first hand that they are not only legit but priced right.

The last time I was in Richmond Hood there was a guy named Calendar. He was a cool dude but definately a little stuffy, like he was too busy on his laptop to talk to me. Definately did make for a bad vibe. What we are all missing out on here is this day in age, everyone got sneakers for sale BUT if you don’t have someone selling them to you that you like, it makes for a bad experience.

One Up did not have the same line of t-shirts and clothing as just about all the stores I mentioned earlier (and hope it stays that way) but they were unique and real down to earth, so for that I highly recomend One Up to all my friends and family in SI and will do so until I have a reason not to. I live in Orlando Fl. and was back on SI to visit my family. I am a Proffessional Artist for Disney.

Kudos to the guys at One Up for Bringing a little NYC to SI, NYC!

DIZZYD

Richmond Hood is whack….Why because I agree with that Leon dude. There was 2 guys in there the last time I was there, some white guy who they said was they’re house skater(whatever that means) and the black guy called Calendar, neither one of them were too friendly. Yes they had some cool stuff in there, very limited and not much of a skate selection. A real skate shop would have alot more stuff and would have cool skater dudes working for them, not a mute white guy who didnt even say whats up when I was asking about trucks and bearings.

One Up is the place to buy kicks from on Staten Island.

I do skate and I skate for a shop in NJ because there is no one on SI worth skating for.

RH looks like a front for something, cause last time I was in there they had only old SB’s available and hardly anything else. I would rather go to Zumies then RH, my opinion which is why we are here.

If One Up does a skate shop and they run it right like the sneaker store then I will gladly leave my highly sponsored team to come to my hometown of SI!

Jessica L Herndon

Woooo Hoooo Awesome Just Awesome!! One Up Sneakers Rocks!!!

Tariq

Peace Leon, no sore spots over here my dude, i’m gonna sleep so good tonight as well as tomorrow. You probably came in when we stepped out, pardon it happens. As far as the north shore being mostly ghetto! Its actually like the rest of NYC. Million dollar homes right up the block from the hood. To better serve our customers we relocated RHC to a new easily accessible location with better parking, on a busier business strip. We’re around the corner from those beautiful fancy schmancy homes and a few more blocks away from the hood. AlienLife, I told Callender he acts too fly sometimes. Its funny hearing it from someone else though. However Callender, Donny & Brian are all super cool dudes who will play your favorite song, as well as put you in some hot kicks. I also chuckle when reading the posts about whos this whos that. AGAIN FOLKS DO YOU! We’ll continue to do us. “If you don’t like it, it’ll cost you nothing. Pay me no mind” One Up Rocks, but they don’t rock like RHC… RHC rocks but we don’t rock like them. Its called being unique and original. Respect that! However you feel, support your local shops & stay the hell away from the mall. last post from us over here. we have work to do.

Once again, Against Da’ Grill will re-open in days. Over 100 different freshly made gourmet wraps, salads & sandwiches for you to choose from. Against Da’ Grain Staten Islands Finest Haircuts (2 convenient locations). Richmond Hood Company – Staten Island Get Fresh. [[picture me throwing the deuce up]] PEACE OUT family! Congrats to Scotty, glad you were able to snatch up that AF ACE VEST before someone else got to it. So F’N HOT! ok, i’m out, its dinner time then off to the gym.

VerrazanoKid

I cannot wait to go to this store. The closest one to a premium sneaker boutique was CD Skateshop. I am definitely gonna pass by around to see what they got. Good luck and congrats 1up Sneakers.

Mike Dee

One Up is an excellent place for the young n flashy. You can get kicks old n new and Big Ron makes you feel right at home whenever you walk in the place.

RHC is a dope place but i think it would be better if they had more pieces available…Tariq knows his stuff and is a respectful dude.

Lets build Shaolin !

-The Cloudkicker

Ron Tulotta

Thanks again NIKE SB.org for the respect and for sending people our way.

I am not going to entertain anyone by writing about other stores, here at One Up its all about the sneakers. I personally know Tariq and have nothing but respect for him and his team at RH. As a amatter of fact T, I would like a wrap named “The Ronnie Large”… Maybe some grilled Chicken, falafel, some hummus, some taziki sauce, tomatoes, shredded carrots and raisins. Gonna stop by Against da Grill for that wrap in a few days if I can make it.

So far we have seen new faces and made some new sales with the little write up on NikeSB.org. SO thanks again James and the whole crew at NIKESB.org for showing us much love and to all Sneaker Heads stopping through and calling (phone has been ringing like crazy) to show love.

I also want to mention that we are NOT taking pre orders for Space Jams, yes it is true we will have them for sale December 19th and it will be solely on a first come first serve basis. Also we have just 1 pair left of the NikeSb Dunk High RESN’s in a sz 10.5 for all you callers asking for the sizes that are left.

And yes we do have a few smaller sizes left in the Jams right now but these are for sale in-store only right now.

Also available are the new Flu Game 12’s as well as plenty more of the Rising Sun 12’s, not to leave out some hot new AM 90’s, Lebron 7’s (Shadows), new 60+ Pistons and the all black Griff’s just to name a few…

PeAcE OuT Homies….

Tariq

Now that sounds like a delicious wrap right there. “The Ronnie Large”! I love it & Will definitely run that by the crew. Peace & Respect to everyone on the Island building towards something good for our neighborhoods & lifestyles. Hold It Down Staten Island Family.

LeArtist

Ok, this place of for real. I just went there and purchased a pair of Jordan 12 “Flu Games” and a pair of Brain Wreck SB’s. I mentioned to dude that I was from Jersey and came to Staten Island to check out his spot. He not only has good prices but he took $10 off to cover my tolls…

ONE UP IS DA BOMB!

SNKRFRK

I went to One Up today to check it out. I must admit they have something pretty dope going on. They had alot of cool kicks and some nice t-shirts. It definately feels as if you are in some fancy sneaker store in Manhattan, without the attitude. Their was about 10 kids in there, some buying sneakers and tees and some just looking. I purchased a pair of the Flu Games and a Contraverse t-shirt. Guys were pretty cool in there and its a cool place to check out.

I will probably be back on Dec 19th, they say they are going to have a party and the Space Jams for sale that day.

Thanks One Up for the new sneakers, first in my crew to have them.

DapperDunkman

Got to give a shout out to the guys at One Up. Good lookin out for holdin me the sz 8.5 Flu Games and for the fresh new Griff’s, o and the dope new AM 90’s.

You are One Up above the competition. Name says it all..

Few more days for the cherry 12’s… Don;’t forget my 8.5’s.

Keepin it real in SI.

Ron Tulotta

Few of my friends told me that they been to One Up, says its a pretty laid back place to buy new kicks.

Gonna probably ride over to them tomorrow. Will let you all know how it went.

Ron Tulotta

HAHA Samara, your supposed to sign in with your name.

Everyone knows im not about to ride my bike anywhere…lol

Love ya.

Dope Nino

yo this place is serious son ! ! i came all the way from long island to check this place out. I got the resn guccis out there and the black and chrome 2s for good money too ! ! it was my first time being out in Staten Island and the owners even gave me a ride to the SIR .. Bottom line is if you were thinking about hitting this shop you were on the right track :)

DEADSTOCKCHAMP

Tried doing business with Ron (One Up, Staten Island). Warning to all potential customers, approach all transactions with caution. Attempted to purchase a pair of Nike SB Paris Dunks through One Up. This resulted in numerous back and forth emails with Ron consistantly contradicting himself. In the words of Ron himself, “I do not pull d***s”, but I can assure you that he does.
